AMD set to increase power consumption with RDNA 3 GPUs – but not as much as Nvidia

AMD will increase power levels with its RDNA 3 graphics cards, according to an interview with a Team Red executive.

Tom’s gear (opens in a new tab) spoke with Sam Naffziger, SVP, Corporate Fellow and Product Technology Architect at AMD, about next-gen GPUs (presumably RX 7000) on topics like power consumption.

Naffziger observed that the demand for better gaming (and compute) performance is accelerating, while improvements in process technology are slowing down “significantly” at the same time, and that means: “Power levels will continue to increase. Now we have a multi-year roadmap of very significant efficiency improvements to offset this curve, but the trend is there.

The exec again confirmed that with RDNA 3, AMD is expected to take a big leap in performance per watt to the tune of 50% (or more) over current RDNA 2 graphics cards – a huge efficiency boost and one comparable to progress made from RDNA to RDNA 2.

Naffziger explained, “Performance is king, but even though our designs are more energy efficient, that doesn’t mean you’re not increasing power levels if the competition is doing the same. It’s just that they will have to push them much higher than us.

In other words, Nvidia pushing hard with power consumption to get more raw performance means AMD needs to do the same to catch up – so we can expect more power-hungry cards this time around. with the RX 7000 range, that’s for sure. But the key point that Naffziger makes of course is that Nvidia will have to go much higher in terms of power, with less efficiency with its next-gen Lovelace (RTX 4000) cards (or so is the expectation – and not only here).

Analysis: The cost of following Lovelace

So, it looks like higher power consumption (or TBP) levels can be expected from AMD and Nvidia with their respective next-gen graphics cards, and that’s something that’s been rumored for a long time.

For AMD, we’ve seen various power consumption speculations, including that the flagship RDNA 3 (Navi 31) could reach around 375W, or even more, possibly reaching 450W. Although more recent leaks suggest we’re looking at the lower end of this scale.

Meanwhile, when it comes to Nvidia’s power consumption, the vine has been carrying more disturbing theories for some time, including speculation around the RTX 4090 pushing 600W – although 450W was another number. suggested more acceptable.

It’s pretty clear that the rumor mill paints broadly the same picture as Naffziger did in this interview, but the problem is that the hint left here might point to something a bit more power-hungry from Team Red in the aim to keep pace with Nvidia. pedal-to-the-metal position on power and performance.
